In Oakley, California, scammers, predominantly impersonating trusted entities like banks and utility companies, have reportedly pilfered a record $8.8 billion from victims, marking a 30% increase from the previous year.

Among the latest victims is a stressed East Bay woman, preparing for a hospital visit, who unknowingly fell prey to a scam while attempting to return a purchase to a store.

Facing impending surgery, Tracy Jones sought to complete some tasks before her hospitalization.

In a rush, she discovered a phone number online, believing it belonged to a legitimate customer service representative. However, it turned out to be a ruse.

Just hours before heading to the hospital, Jones, dealing with the frustration of receiving damaged grilling baskets, attempted to return them through what she thought was Etsy customer service.

Little did she know, this decision would add to the challenges of what she described as the worst day of her life.
