Using AI-generated videos, the scammer duped an employee into transferring funds by impersonating the CFO and colleagues. Protect Yourself from Skype Scams: Avoiding Impersonation by Fraudulent Police Officers
Mumbai-based Kinjal Shah received an automated call warning her of deactivation within two hours, guiding her to press ‘9’ to file a complaint. Later, she was coerced into a video call to address an alleged FIR against her.
Suspecting a scam, she realized the caller was impersonating a police officer. Such ‘virtual badge’ Skype scams involve fake law enforcement contacting individuals, claiming they’re implicated in a crime. Look out for suspicious signs like prolonged calls, discouragement from visiting police stations, and absence of genuine police protocol.
