The Bermuda Police Service has issued a warning about a scam targeting residents, particularly the elderly.

Scammers are contacting individuals from what appear to be local telephone numbers, attempting to obtain sensitive banking information.

According to the police, “intended victims are reportedly being told their credit or debit cards have been flagged for suspicious purchases, with the caller then asking for verification of credit or debit card information.” This includes card numbers, expiry dates, the name on the card, and the card verification value (CVV) number.

Additionally, some intended victims are being asked to download ‘AnyDesk’ software, which would allow the scammers to gain remote access to the victim’s computer.

In response to this threat, the Bermuda Police Service has provided several guidelines for residents:

  • If contacted about your finances by anyone other than a trusted relative or friend, do not provide any information about your money, bank account number, bank cards, PIN number, address, or any other personal details.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls to the Bermuda Police Service.
