A Perth man – Roger Mildenhall who was residing overseas was shocked when he found out last week that his property in Karrinyup worth almost $500,000, had been sold in June without his knowledge.
Mr Mildenhall says his neighbours told him about his property sale last week and he rushed to Perth just in time to stop the sale of his second property too. He said, scammers used faxes, email in an internet cafe and mobile phones, they have been backwards and forwards to his real estate agent telling that Mr.Mildenhall wanted to sell his property and they also created duplicates of the deeds to the house. Mr Mildenhall has engaged a lawyer in a challenge to obtain his property back and police are also investigating the scam.
Consumer Protection Commissioner Anne Driscoll says it is not so far known how the scammers achieved.
Real Estate Institute West Australian (REIWA) spokeswoman Anne Arnold said that agents need to be attentive.
“It is a really important message that you need to be doubly careful if it’s overseas.”
She states changes should be included to prevent and rip off future scams.
