Beware of Fake Calls Claiming to Be from Your Local Newspaper

By ScamRipper Jun 21, 2024 #Scam Awareness

In recent weeks, some Lowndes County residents have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be from “your local newspaper” and seeking personal financial information.

“These robocalls are not from The Valdosta Daily Times or our parent company, CNHI, and should be ignored,” stated Laurie Gay, publisher of The Times.

The calls assert that the recipient’s newspaper subscription is expiring and request a credit or debit card number to restart delivery. These calls do not specifically mention The Times but begin with a variation of “This is your local newspaper.”

Even employees of The Times have received these fraudulent calls.

If you are uncertain whether you are speaking with someone from The Valdosta Daily Times, hang up and call The Times directly at 229-244-1880 for confirmation.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a phone scam should contact the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint.
