Durango resident John Perry had just stepped off the airplane in Los Angeles to take part in a bicycle race when he received the voicemail.The caller claimed to be Lt. Scott from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, calling for Albert Perry.

“And I’m like, ‘Uh, OK, well that’s not me,’ so I called because I wanted to do the right thing,” Perry said. “And he said, ‘Oh no, I think my secretary made a mistake, I’m looking for John Perry.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s me.’”

Perry was about to become the latest victim of a telephone scam making the rounds in La Plata County. For the scam, a caller uses the name of an actual La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputy in an effort to extort money from unsuspecting residents.Read more

Victims of Fake Crypto Investor Scam

When Ahad Shams detailed on Twitter how his company was scammed out of $4 million in cryptocurrency after a face-to-face meeting, Chris Hunter immediately recognized what was going on.

Only weeks ago, Hunter fell victim to the same con apparently run by the same group. Having contacted Shams after reading his story in The Register, Hunter quickly learned that there are more victims out there.

“We are by no means the only people this has been happening to,” Hunter told The Reg. “It seems to date back to 2018, but it takes slightly different forms each time.”Read more

SCAM ALERT: JCSD Warns Area Residents of False Deputy Scam Calls

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is warning area residents not to fall for a current scam.

According to JCSD, a caller, who identifies himself as “Sergeant John Carter with the Jones County Sheriff’s Department,” is calling area residents advising them that they have an outstanding subpoena and is attempting to scam money from residents.

The caller attempts to get residents to provide a debit-style card to pay to have the subpoena taken care of.

The sheriff’s department said this is a pure scam. They are only focused on separating you from your hard-earned money.Read more
