72-Year-Old Man Scammed Out of $75,000 in Computer Fraud Scheme

It all began with an innocent-looking email sent to a 72-year-old man, warning him that his computer was infected. The email included a phone number for assistance, which the victim called, unknowingly connecting with a criminal on the other end.

Mack Brown, an investigator with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, explained how the scam unfolded. “Once the victim contacted the number, the scammers convinced him they could help and sent him a pin that allowed them remote access to his computer,” Brown said.

With access to his computer, the criminal could view everything—emails, documents, and even bank account information. They then convinced the victim that his bank account had been compromised and that he needed to withdraw $45,000. Unfortunately, the victim complied.

“They even sent someone to his house to collect the money,” Brown added.

Fortunately, the victim later spoke to family members who warned him that he might be the target of a scam. Realizing something was wrong, he contacted the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Despite this, the scammers convinced him to withdraw another $30,000.

However, this time, law enforcement was ready. “We were there waiting for the courier,” Brown said. When the courier arrived, authorities apprehended him.

The suspect, identified as Farun Huang, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated theft. Records indicate that Huang, a resident of California, posted his $15,000 bail and has since been released from jail.

“These scammers come from all over,” Brown emphasized. “We need to protect the elderly. If you don’t recognize the email, don’t open it. If you don’t recognize the phone number, don’t answer it.”
