A 76-year-old woman became the victim of an elder scam in Roosevelt on Tuesday afternoon, police reported.

The incident occurred on Nassau Road near Debevoise Avenue when an unknown man approached the woman, offering to help carry her groceries.

She accepted his offer. Once they arrived at her home, the man claimed he had a winning lottery ticket but was unable to cash it himself.

Wishing to assist, the woman offered to cash the ticket for him. However, the man insisted on needing collateral. She handed over several pieces of jewelry, but he stated it wasn’t sufficient and that she needed to withdraw $2,000 from the bank.

Shortly afterward, an unknown woman driving a white four-door sedan arrived at the victim’s home and drove them to the Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Nassau Road, where the woman made the withdrawal.

Upon returning home, the woman realized she had been scammed and promptly called the police.
