GJPD Issues Warning About Ongoing Scam and Theft Attempts

The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) is warning the community about an ongoing scam reported by several residents.

The scam involves a well-dressed man approaching elderly women in store parking lots, claiming that one of their vehicle’s tires is flat. While the man distracts the women, an accomplice reaches into the vehicle and steals personal belongings. In each case, the victims’ credit cards were used immediately in nearby stores.

The GJPD urges residents to be vigilant and follow these safety tips to avoid falling victim to the scam:

  1. Be Cautious: Be wary of strangers, even if they appear friendly. It’s okay to be skeptical. If someone insists on showing you a tire issue, tell them you will call for help and stay in your vehicle.
  2. Stay Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to those around you. Trust your instincts; if something feels off, it probably is.
  3. Don’t Give Thieves the Opportunity: Never leave your purse or wallet unattended. Thieves look for crimes of opportunity, so keep your belongings with you at all times.
  4. Report Suspicious Activity: Report any suspicious activity to the Grand Junction Police Department at 970-549-5000 or non-emergency dispatch at 970-242-6707.
