Among all the impersonation scams reported by Amazon customers in 2023, the leading tactic involves fake alerts about suspicious activity on your Amazon account. This scam, also known as “Suspicious Activity Scams,” has affected customers in over 20 countries, with more than 15 instances reported in July alone.
How the Scam Works:
Scammers contact you via text, email, or phone call, claiming that your Amazon account has been suspended or deleted due to “suspicious activity.” They then urge you to click on a fraudulent link or provide information verbally to “verify your account.” Unwitting customers who follow these instructions are tricked into giving away their payment information or account login credentials.
Impersonation scams occur when fraudsters pose as a reputable organization or individual to steal money or personal information. Amazon is dedicated to safeguarding consumers from these scams and offering guidance on self-protection. It’s important to note that Amazon will never request your password or sensitive personal information over the phone or on any site other than Amazon.com.
Protect Yourself:
- Do not click on any links or provide your information to anyone over the phone without verifying the legitimacy of the email or phone call.
- If you have concerns about your account status, visit Amazon.com or use the Amazon app to check your account details, including the Message Center, which logs all communications sent from Amazon.
