The Laurel Police Department is alerting Sussex County residents about a recent text message scam.
According to the LPD, the scam involves victims receiving text messages from individuals posing as someone they know. The conversation initially seems normal but eventually transitions to the scammer asking for money in the form of gift cards.
Laurel Police advise that if you suspect you are being scammed or believe the person contacting you is not who they claim to be, you should directly contact the person before proceeding.
There is no need to contact the LPD if the scam was merely attempted. However, if you transferred any money, you should immediately contact Laurel Police.
